Evidence-Informed Therapy Approaches, We use
Every person is unique, which is why there is no single approach that works for everyone. Our therapists use an integrated, evidence-informed approach, drawing from a variety of therapeutic models to meet your individual needs, goals, and lived experiences. Below are some of the therapy approaches used by our clinicians. Not every therapist is trained in every modality, so we encourage you to review each therapist’s bio or book a free consultation to help find the right fit.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns to improve emotions and behaviors. It’s effective for anxiety, depression, OCD and more.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT combines mindfulness and emotional regulation strategies to help individuals manage intense emotions and build healthy coping skills.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process traumatic or distressing experiences that continue to affect their thoughts, emotions, and nervous system. EMDR can help reduce the emotional intensity of difficult memories, allowing you to respond to present-day situations with greater calm, confidence, and resilience. It is commonly used to support trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, grief, and other experiences that continue to affect daily life.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps clients embrace difficult thoughts and feelings while committing to value-driven actions to improve mental health and well-being.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate approach that helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself, such as the inner critic, people-pleaser, perfectionist, or protective parts that develop through life experiences. By building a relationship with these parts, clients often experience greater self-compassion, emotional healing, and lasting change.
Clinical Hypnosis
Clinical hypnosis uses focused attention and therapeutic suggestion to help support meaningful change. While in hypnosis, you remain aware and in control as your therapist guides you toward your goals. Clinical hypnosis may help with anxiety, stress, confidence, habits, emotional regulation, trauma, chronic pain, and other concerns by working with the mind’s natural ability to learn and adapt.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy helps clients reframe their personal stories, empowering them to view themselves and their experiences in a more positive light.
Solution-Focused Therapy
This goal-oriented approach focuses on finding practical solutions and building on existing strengths to overcome challenges.
The Gottman Method for Couples Counseling
A research-based approach to strengthen relationships by improving communication, rebuilding trust, and fostering intimacy and connection.
Mindfulness Strategies
Mindfulness-based approaches help clients develop greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without judgment. Learning to stay present can reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, strengthen resilience, and help you respond more intentionally rather than reacting automatically.
Perinatal Mental Health Training
Specialized training to support individuals navigating fertility challenges, pregnancy, loss, and postpartum experiences with care and expertise.
Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek counselling when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally exhausted, stuck in unhelpful patterns, or are navigating relationship challenges, life transitions, grief, trauma, or parenting concerns. Therapy provides a supportive space to better understand yourself, develop practical coping strategies, and work toward meaningful, lasting change.
What types of therapy do you offer?
Our therapists use an integrative, evidence-informed approach, drawing from a variety of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Clinical Hypnosis, Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and the Gottman Method for couples. Your therapist will recommend an approach based on your goals, concerns, and preferences.
How do I know which type of therapy I need?
You don’t need to know which therapy approach is right for you before booking. Your therapist will take time to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and recommend an approach that best fits your goals. Therapy is collaborative, and many clinicians integrate multiple evidence-informed approaches rather than relying on a single modality.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
For many concerns, research has shown that virtual therapy can be just as effective as in-person counselling. Some clients appreciate the convenience and flexibility of attending sessions from home, while others prefer meeting face-to-face. We offer both in-person therapy in Bowmanville and virtual therapy across Ontario, allowing you to choose the option that best fits your needs.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP). As every insurance plan is different, we recommend checking your coverage before your appointment. We provide receipts that you can submit for reimbursement if your plan includes coverage.
What can therapy help with?
